PROJECT NAME 'Resilience'
DATES INSTALLED Summer 2020
LOCATION Rua Red Gallery, Tallaght, Dublin
ISSUE ADDRESSED Nurturing and showcasing the resilience of young people during a global pandemic.
COMMISSIONED BY Cruinniú na nÓg
BACKGROUND
'Resilience' was a project developed specifically for young people to launch 'Cruinniú na nÓg - 2020' - a national day of creativity for children and young people under the age of eighteen.
The project explores and traces the positive idea of being, becoming, and belonging to the theme of resilient/resilience. Through a series of online workshops, I accompanied nine young people from South Dublin through the process of creating their own images that they feel reflected this theme resulting in this large-scale piece.
The work created by the nine young people was used to create a huge internal artwork that spanned two entire walls of Gallery One in Rua Red, Tallaght. This work served as a beacon of survival for these and other young people. Each participant created a boat that represented a number of positive and resilient elements of their character - these vessels ranged from a submarine, to an Irish Navy Coastal Patrol boat to a hand made paper boat. The final artwork used the slogan 'we are not all in the same boat, but we are all in the same storm', to highlight the differences in capacity to deal with a pandemic based on your age, household circumstance, environment and ethnicity.
A series of events, performances, and talks were made in response to 'Resilience' - see our short film below. This project was designed and undertaken in partnership with Rua Red and Contact Studio.
